See You at the 7: Stories from the Bay Area's Last Original Mile House

A Presentation by Owner and Author Vanessa Garcia

In this first-ever comprehensive narrative on “The 7” as it came to be called in the 1950s, Owner, Vanessa Garcia, reveals its humble beginnings, the notorious exploits of its early owners, and the heart and humanity of the people who worked, laughed, and loved in that lively shack along Bayshore Boulevard.

About the owner, Vanessa Garcia:

Vanessa Garcia, originally from Manila, Philippines, was a drummer, backup singer and original member of the Philippine-based all female pop-rock group 'Prettier Than Pink'. In 1996 she moved to the US, and graduated from Golden Gate University with a Masters in Science degree in Public Relations (1999) and worked as a PR consultant for technology companies such as Sun Microsystems and Sybase. Using only her music and PR background, Vanessa took over 7 Mile House in 2004 and turned it into an award-winning family and dog-friendly restaurant, sports bar, and live music venue. She is also a pioneer of the Filipino food movement in the Bay Area, introducing dishes like adobo and sisig to the menu, which quickly became the restaurants most popular dishes. Vanessa recently wrote and self-published the book See You at the 7 - Stories From the Bay Area's Last Original Mile House, positioning herself as the historian and guardian of 7 Mile House.

About 7 Mile House:

Established in 1858, the historic 7 Mile House is a family and dog-friendly restaurant, sports bar, and live music venue, serving up a unique mix of homestyle American and Filipino food. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area for 160 years, 7 Mile House is the only Bay Area mile house left standing in its original location. From its colorful history as a stagecoach stop in the 1800s and an infamous sports gambling joint in the 80s, to becoming an award-winning establishment, 7 Mile House boasts great food, drinks, sports via satellite and live entertainment every single night.

About See You at the 7 - Stories From the Bay Area’s Last Original Mile House:

In this first-ever comprehensive narrative on “The 7” as it came to be called in the 1950s, Owner, Vanessa Garcia, reveals its humble beginnings, the notorious exploits of its early owners, and the heart and humanity of the people who worked, laughed, and loved in that lively shack along Bayshore Boulevard.

She traces its roots from 1858, when it began as a toll gate carved along the bayside of San Bruno mountain, to being an illegal gambling den in the years leading up to Prohibition, to a melting pot of carefree workers from Southern Pacific in the 1940s and S.E. Rykoff in the 1980s. Alongside the never-before discussed history and photographs of Bayshore and Brisbane, 7 Mile House’s old denizens share personal stories, both touching and amusing.

This is a book for history lovers and nostalgia buffs alike. It will make you yearn for bygone times—grittier, but more innocent times—and hopefully, move you to better appreciate and preserve places that represent those years.
