The History of California Wines in 20 Labels
From humble roots, how did California’s wine industry grow into the international powerhouse it is today? Join us as UC Davis wine historian James Lapsley takes us on a journey from the earliest days, when the Gold Rush drove a new thirst for domestic wine, to a world of seemingly endless consumer choice — a world in which wine has become an integral part of American culture. Beautiful vintage wine labels from the collections at the California Historical Society and the UC Davis Library illuminate each chapter in the story of California wine.
Following the talk, enjoy a glass of wine from Bouchaine Vineyards poured by Chris Kajani, a member of the UC Davis Alumni Wine Program, as you explore the exhibition of post-Prohibition era labels.
This event is for guests 21 and over.
Dr. James Lapsley is an internationally known author, winemaker, and adjunct associate professor in the Viticulture and Enology Department at UC Davis. He is also a researcher for the University of California's Agricultural Issues Center, where he studies wine and grape economics. His book, Bottled Poetry, chronicles the history of Napa Valley and the transformation of its wines following the repeal of Prohibition. As a researcher and instructor, Lapsley specializes in the history and economics of wine making and marketing — including how wine labels, one of the most visible tools for wine marketing, have evolved over time. Lapsley was also the president and winemaker for Orleans Hill Winery, a winery known for producing wine from organically grown grapes, from 1980 to 2002.
