Join Jeff Guinn as he discusses his new book, THE ROAD TO JONESTOWN. With the same riveting detail and unmatched investigative reporting that made Guinn’s Manson an acclaimed national bestseller, THE ROAD TO JONESTOWN sheds new light on a subject we thought we knew: Jim Jones, the man responsible for the death of more than nine hundred people at Jonestown in Guyana.

An award-winning investigative journalist, Guinn’s study of Jones and the Peoples Temple is unprecedented. He scoured through thousands of pages of FBI files, including material newly released during the course of his research. He traveled to Jones’s Indiana hometown, where he spoke to people who have previously refused interviews, and also to Jonestown survivors, who offered fresh insight on the story. And he traveled to Guyana, where he visited the Jonestown site with the very same pilot who flew there the day that Congressman Leo Ryan was murdered on Jones’s orders.

A tragedy that still haunts the American memory, THE ROAD TO JONESTOWN is the first time the story of the man behind the largest murder-suicide in American history is being told in full. From his early days as a young Indianapolis minister who preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism, to his extramarital affairs, rampant drug use, and fraudulent faith healing, Guinn brings the real Jim Jones to life in chilling detail as he examines the events that led to the fatal day in November 1978 when more than nine hundred people—including almost three hundred infants and children—perished after being ordered to swallow a cyanide-laced drink.

After the presentation, California Historical Society's reference librarians and archivists will provide a one hour open house in the North Baker Research Library and will show collections connected to Peoples Temple and Jim Jones.
