60th Anniversary of On the Road with Jack Kerouac Biographer Dennis McNally

Sixty years ago, Jack Kerouac’s On the Road became one of the formative books that helped to catalyze the Beat Generation into one of the pillars of the hippie counterculture entering the American consciousness during the Summer of Love. Published on September 5, 1957, the book has been named one of the most important American novels of the twentieth century and Kerouac, the “King of the Beats,” has been hailed as an iconic American figure who inspired San Francisco’s revolutionary fervor in 1967 and beyond.

Join us for a very special evening with Dennis McNally, guest curator for the California Historical Society’s exhibition On the Road to the Summer of Love and the author of Desolate Angel: Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation, and America. McNally will talk about the book’s importance, Kerouac’s influence on the counterculture, and the Beat influence on San Francisco in the years leading up to the Summer of Love. As the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love heads toward an end, it is an evening you won’t want to miss.
